Two days ago, my grandfather Wayne Leatherman passed on at the old age of 88 years old. He was a man of true integrity, a man of honor, and above all: a man who loved and was loved by his family.

He also will be remembered for his other passions: Kentucky Fried Chicken, the Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan era, the Nebraska Cornhuskers always, approximating the temperature of the sun with his Hedge wood burning heater, any dog carrying the namesake Blacky, cinnamon flavored Dentyne gum, and the Doxology.

I’ll always remember riding in our plastic sleds while he pulled us around on his tractor, the extended family trip to Colorado with horseback riding, and how he always had the biggest grin on his face when his picture was being taken.

You were the figurehead of the Leatherman clan to so many of us in your family, and your proud legacy will live on for many, many years. We are proud to be part of your family tree.

Rest in peace Grandpa.

Biographical masterpiece Malcolm X details the historical significance and opinionated teachings of one of the most famous civil rights leaders of all time. To be frank, I hadn’t much knowledge of Mr. X prior to watching this movie, and I hope that is as accurate as it was informative.

From watching his troubled youth transform into a manhood of words and ideas, Malcolm was a passionate man with a precise vision of how he wanted the world to change. This movie shows that opinions, even strongly postured and publicized opinions, can grow and change into something bigger than just one man. Seeing Malcolm go from broad generalizations about race to a more human, democratic opinion of individual judgement was particularly moving to watch. The power of an idea is the greatest power a man can have. And if that man can communicate his idea effectively, and precisely enough so that it can be understood as it was meant to be understood, and with the passion and fire from which it came, that idea can engulf many a mind in its flame.

Without a doubt, he was a man that would have continued to change the world in great ways if he hadn’t been taken from it. And if the world needs anything, it’s both men of ideas and the change they inspire.

Family always comes first. Before lawfulness, before morality, before ethics, that is where family lives. This is the story of a family that didn’t always get along, but knew that the absence of conflict doesn’t mitigate the true feeling of home that only a family can provide. Cruising along in an old Volkswagon van just as dysfunctional as their family itself, the family makes its way across three states for the youngest daughter to participate in what might be at worst described as the pedophilia infested
sexual predator infested waters of child beauty pageants, but at best as the herding of children by mothers projecting dreams resulting from disappointments in their own lives. A loving, substance abusing grandfather, a suicidal uncle, an unsuccessful self help entrepreneur dad, and a well meaning but entirely too stressed out mother trying to keep the family from imploding all participate in the story to help their little girl remain beautiful, if not to the beauty pageant judges, then to herself.

Highly recommended.

After seeing the latest highlights from Manchester United versus Derby (a team at the very bottom of the English Premier League at the moment), there is a particularly interesting portion at the end of the game. Man-U is leading 3-1 and in no danger of losing. Cristiano Ronaldo is passed the ball in Derby’s penalty box, and takes a blatantly obvious purposeful dive. In life, there’s nothing I dislike more than a cheater. It’s a disgrace to the game, to his team, to himself. See for yourself, it occurs at about 5:52 into this video.

Woody Allen has a famous quote: “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” While perhaps not in pursuit of success (and what Wes Anderson movie would end as such), this is a story about truly facing your problems when they are the ugliest. After their father passes away, three brothers embark on an epic journey to be ambiguously spiritual, find themselves, and their lost brotherhood. Unique soundtracks, colorful locations, and matched luggage create an experience almost as good as Life Aquatic, complete with a cameo from Bill Murray.

A few unorganized notes: This was my first introduction to The Kinks, whom had a great song entitled “Strangers” in the movie. One of the brothers wore his father’s prescription sunglasses in spite of the headache they caused, just because they made him feel closer. Jason Schwartzman is getting predictable with his trademark awkward pause between question and answer. In every movie review I create (including this and the last), I will not fail to use the go-to adjective of the movie industry: epic.

Recommended, especially if you liked The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizzou.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/technology/04jammer.html

If you don’t know what a white noise generator is, it’s an electronic device that generates noise that pollutes the frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum. Normally, the noise generated would coincide with the frequencies of other commonly used electronic devices, and this particular article focuses on cellular telephone frequencies. But it could be used to block any wireless transmission: wireless internet, television, radio, etc.

If this has piqued your interest, you can get more information on how to build a nice jammer called the Wave Bubble here.

But I digress. In the article, an investigator was sent by Verizon to an area that reportedly had a jammer in operation. This behavior is, of course, illegal. Here’s the money:

“He went to everyone in town and gave them his number and said if they were having trouble, they should call him right away,” the owner said.”

Let me lay that out for you, you dirty layperson. To report the inability of your phone, please immediately call the investigator… using your phone. Delicious.

So, I sat down to a nice, healthy doctor’s recommended dosage of YouTube this past week to be greeted by a new video from one of the users I’ve subscribed to, Major League Soccer. Major League Soccer officially posts videos on YouTube in order to increase interest in soccer in the United States and increase interest in United States Soccer internationally.

But in their video entitled “2007 Golden Boot Award”, I noticed an interesting phenomenon. Letters in the title on the intro to the video appear one at at a time, flicking through a sequence of unrelated characters to settle on the final letter. But when spelling out the final letter in “Golden Boot”, there is a very noticeable delay in which the letter that will end up appearing as a T instead flashes as a B for more time than any other letter in the sequence. This, of course, spells out “Golden Boob”.

Notice below the final image:

And now see what flashes immediately before the above:

Of course, I believe this was purposeful. It’s too obvious to be an oversight. This post was not endorsed or sponsored by Budweiser or Major League Soccer.

See for yourself here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfSY0gPLsgA

A good movie about the epic battle to get the highest score on the arcade version of Donkey Kong. A story of conspiracies, human shortcomings, good and not quite as good (definitely not evil).

After seeing the movie and visiting the website that the movie was about (Twin Galaxies), I can honestly say that I doubt the accuracy of the story that was told. A couple of points:
1. The movie detailed a fight for the high score between two people. When in fact, the high score war involved a third person that was never even mentioned.

2. The movie has become outdated since it’s release, since the current record holder no longer matches what was shown in the final scene.

3. There were scenes in which a tape for a score was admitted, despite glaring inconsistencies in the video quality and possible problems with the tape being seamless. Was the original tape ever witnessed? Why was the score given validity without inspection of Billy’s machine? The movie made it seem as though Steve’s tape wasn’t admitted to be a high score because there wasn’t a judge present to witness his score, which I don’t think was consistent, because none of Billy’s scores were witnessed by a judge (if you don’t count himself).

Anyway, just a few of the things that I saw. I tried to register for an account to post some questions on their forums, but they don’t seem to want to verify my registration. Oh well, it’s just a video game.

Yesterday marked the end of my 30 day abstinence from pop, soda, and coke. Honestly, it wasn’t difficult. Yes, I missed the flavor sensation of an ice cold prescription from my good friend Pepper MD. But today I had my first Dr. Pepper in 30 days and I can honestly say that it wasn’t everything I remember it to be. However, I must confess that I did in fact not make it the full 30 days without soda. I drank approximately 5 oz of Coke by accident whilst attending a party to watch the USA vs Brasil football friendly match… But that’s the only soda intake I had during the 30 days. So, to date, I have not successfully completed any of my month-goals, as I didn’t make it a full month without television either. But I will keep making the goals, as I think they are helping me to grow as a person, or at the very least makes me feel like I have more control over what goes on in my life. What do you want to go without for 30 days?
