I also don't think I'd develop any applications that required Google Gears to function, unless its audience was solely the web developer crowd. I'd put my money on the open web any day. Improve the browser first using standards, not plug-ins. But I think GI could complete more things that out of our expected. For example,agianst the popular of iPhone,may be there needs a complete framework in javascript to develop SOA huge application in safari on iPhone,so there's some chance for GI to gain more respect. And I have interested in integrated the GI & google gears to improve the performance of GI and add more ability ,like multi-threading,local database .
