We're always interested in ways to lessen the weight of the assets we serve on sites, which often means better performance for all. Thankfully, newer browsers are starting to support the new WOFF2 compression format, the successor to the widely implemented WOFF font format. On average, WOFF2 results in 30% smaller files compared to WOFF.

Zach Leatherman is a builder for the web at Font Awesome and the creator of Build Awesome (née Eleventy/11ty), an award-winning open source website generator. He measures website performance with speedlify and at one point became too fixated on web fonts.
